I live in Pakistan , the situation is worse here. Only rich people can afford good education and the poor lags behind. Somehow the current government has introduced reforms in the current education system. We have the world's 2nd largest Open University (www.aiou.com.pk) and now we even have an online university (www.vu.edu.pk) with very low fee and quality courses. I believe that primary, secondary and vocational education must be free in every healthy, prosperous society. Knowing about good and bad and how to survive is ones birth right and must never be deprived of it. Then decide whether it is to be free or pay for it. I think after all discussed it would be fair for those with means to pay something at that quality education and the rest get it free -as you say the poor ones. If a person were to come from a poorer family that can't afford to put them through college, they still have other options. Community colleges are easy to attend for free with financial waivers. Additionally, if they were to do well in school and/or sports, scholarships are readily available. That's why the American Dream is possible for anyone. Anyone can do it.
